During our 1 x square metre challenge, in spring 2022, we gave away envelopes with enough annual wildflower seeds to cover that size of area and we discovered people were asking the same questions...
How do we sow them?
It will look untidy, won’t it?
How long will we have to wait before there are flowers?
Why should I bother with wildflowers?
All reasonable questions, and, despite there being full instructions with the packets (including access to a video) a good proportion of recipients were confused, uncertain and unsure as to
why we were asking them to introduce wildflowers into their outside spaces.
At On The Verge our major focus is to create wildlife habitats, in all sorts of places, specifically to increase the number and range of pollinators, of all shapes and sizes.
“If wildflowers decline further because of inadequate pollination, then this means even less food for the remaining pollinators. Some scientists have speculated that this could spark and ‘extinction vortex’ in which numbers of flowers and pollinators spiral down to mutual extinction”

Silent Earth – Averting the insect apocalypse.
The whole subject matter of insects, pollination and the importance to human food stocks is, sometimes, just too much of a massive subject to comprehend, let alone being able, or motivated enough, to make a difference in our everyday lives.
Join us to show that 1MetreMatters.
The overriding emphasis of 1MetreMatters is for people not be overwhelmed by the whole environment issue and to concentrate their minds on choosing 1 metre of their space – indoor/patio/garden/nearby verges etc.
With our experience, over several years, creating and maintaining wildlife habitats, we will help you every step of the way – enabling you to make your contribution towards increasing the pollinator numbers and helping bio-diversity in your spaces.
Sometimes thinking about our planet and its environment can be a bit daunting.
It might seem like too big a subject to think we, as individuals, can make a difference.
1MetreMatters gives ideas of how you can help our environment and increase insect numbers.
Estimates vary and are imprecise, but it seems likely that insects have declined in abundance by 75%, or more, since 1970...
